What is the 1-20-12 Endurance Challenge?

The 1-20-12 Endurance Challenge pits you vs you  in a walk/run event consisting of a 1-mile loop that must be completed every 20 minutes.  Participants who complete the loop before the 20 minutes can rest, eat, drink and change clothes within the designated support team area while waiting for the next 20 minute loop to start.  All participants must be at the start line at the beginning of each 20 minute loop.  If a participant does not complete a loop within 20 minutes they will be eliminated.  Participants continue to complete a 1-mile loop every 20 minutes until everyone has been eliminated or for a maximum of 12 hours.  1 , 1-mile loop every 20 minutes;  3 loops in an hour; potential maximum of 36 loops in 12 hours.

When is the 1-20-12 Endurance Challenge?

The 1-20-12 Endurance Challenge will be held Sunday September 15, 2024.  The event grounds will open at 6:00am.  All participants and support team members should arrive at the event by 6:30am.  The race will start at 7am.  The event will end when all participants have been eliminated or 12 hours after the start at 7pm, whichever comes first.

Where is the 1-20-12 Endurance Challenge? 

The 1-20-12 Endurance Challenge will be held on the grounds of the Hawaiian Macadamia Nut Orchards outside of Pahala, Ka'u, Hawaii Island .  Specific directions to the race site will be sent to all participants a week before the event.  The entire course will be within the orchard on a dirt trail.  Support team members will be able to set up pop-up tents near the start line of the loop.   Parking at the event is very limited so participants and support team members are encouraged to travel together.

What is the race course like?

The 1-20-12 Endurance Event is a 1-mile loop on an unpaved trail within a macadamia nut orchard.  The terrain is uneven made of grass, dirt and gravel with occasional tree roots.  The loop is mostly shaded with some open areas.  The 1-mile race loop ranges from 820 feet to 950 feet elevation.

Can I compete as a team?

Participants can compete in the 1-20-12 Endurance Challenge as an individual or as a team of 2.  Pairs must register as a team on the Runsignup page (registration link below).  Teams of 2 must alternate walkers/runners.  If a member of the pair fails to complete the 1-mile loop in 20 minutes both team members will be eliminated.  

Can I access the 1-20-12 event grounds before the race day?

The 1-20-12 Endurance Challenge 1-mile loop is on the grounds of a privately owned, working macadamia nut orchard.  For your safety, participants are not allowed to access the event grounds before the race day.

What should I bring on race day?

1-20-12 Endurance Challenge participants are allowed to use headphones, fitness watches, walking sticks, and headlamps.  You should bring all of your own hydration, food, and changes of clothing .  Participants are allowed to set up 1, 10'x10' pop up tent that their support team can occupy.  All tents must be weighted and secured.  The event will begin at 7am so that adequate morning light will be available.  The event will continue until all participants have been eliminated or until 7pm.  The 1-20-12 Endurance Challenge is an all weather event so participants should be prepared to compete in sun, rain, wind, and heat.

What should I do when I arrive at the event grounds on race day?

The 1-20-12 Endurance Challenge event grounds will be open at 6:00am.  The entrance to the event grounds will be clearly signed on Highway 11.  All participants and support team members should arrive at the event grounds by 6:30am and park in the designated parking area.  Participants must check-in at the Vivawell tent first for instructions, to receive your race wrist band and event shirt.  After checking in, participants and support team members can erect and secure their 10'x10' tents in the designated area.

What if I finish a 1-mile loop faster than 20 minutes?

If a participant finishes the 1 mile loop before the 20 minute time limit they can rest in the designated support team area.  Participants can eat, drink, change clothes and use the port-o-potty during this resting period.  The participant cannot start the next 1-mile loop until the next 20 minute time period begins.  All participants must be within the designated start area at the beginning of each 20 minute loop or they will be disqualified.

Is this a "Last Man Standing" event?

The 1-20-12 Endurance Challenge will end when all participants have been eliminated or 12 hours after the start, at 7pm.  Anyone still competing at 7pm will be considered winners of the event.  Because the course takes place on private property on the working Hawaiian Macadamia Nut Orchards company grounds, organizers and participants of the 1-20-12 Endurance Challenge are only authorized to be on the premises Sunday September 15, 2024 and must leave the property as soon as the event concludes.

What swag will I receive?

All participants will receive a race t-shirt upon check-in at he event.

Who are the event organizers and what will event proceeds benefit? 

The 1-20-12 Endurance Challenge is a fundraising event for Vivawell.org, a Hawaii-Island based 501c3 health promotion nonprofit organization.  All proceeds from the event will support Vivawell's community-based programs on Hawaii Island aimed at preventing chronic health conditions with lifestyle changes, names diet, exercise, stress management and social support.  Vivawell is partnering with the Hawaiian Macadamia Nut Orchards company to produce the 1-20-12 Endurance Challenge.
